What This Means

This page has a meta description tag with a content value shorter than 50 characters. The description exists and is in the right location, but it is significantly shorter than the available snippet space that search engines display.

A description under 50 characters is unlikely to be a complete, useful summary of the page. It may be a placeholder, a truncated copy, or a description that was written for a different context.

Why It Matters for SEO

Search engine result pages display snippets roughly 150–160 characters wide (or 430–920 pixels). A description of fewer than 50 characters uses less than a third of that space. The unused space is not left blank — search engines will expand or replace your snippet with body copy they consider more relevant to the query.

Very short descriptions also give searchers less information to work with. A snippet that reads "Best SEO tool." tells no story; one that explains what the tool does, who it's for, and what makes it worth clicking is far more effective. Click-through rate correlates with how well a snippet answers the searcher's implied question before they click.

What the Platform Checks

The platform measures the character length of the content attribute value (whitespace-trimmed) on the first valid <meta name="description"> tag inside <head>. This check fires when the length is greater than 0 but less than 50 characters. Severity is Notice.

Note: A completely empty or absent description triggers a separate check (Missing Meta Description). This check is specifically for descriptions that exist but are too brief to be effective.

How to Fix It

Expand the description to approximately 120–160 characters. Aim to include:

  • What the page is about — the primary topic, product, or piece of content.
  • Who it's for — the intended audience or use case, if not obvious from context.
  • Why it's worth clicking — a differentiator, a benefit, or a call to action that makes the page stand out from similar results.

Write for the searcher first. A good description reads naturally and answers the question "why should I click this result?" before the click happens. Avoid padding descriptions with keywords — dense keyword lists look spammy and reduce CTR.
