What This Means

This page's meta description, when rendered at the font size and weight used by search engine result pages, measures less than 400 pixels wide. The description is present and correctly placed, but its rendered width falls below the threshold where it provides meaningful snippet coverage.

Pixel-width measurement is a more precise signal than character count. A 40-character description made up of wide characters like "M" and "W" renders wider than a 40-character description made up of narrow characters like "i" and "l". The platform measures actual rendered width rather than approximating from character count alone.

Why It Matters for SEO

Search engines have a fixed pixel-width budget for snippets — typically around 600 pixels on desktop. A description that renders at under 400 pixels leaves more than a third of that space empty. Rather than display a very short snippet, search engines typically substitute their own text, pulling content from the page body that they consider most relevant to the query term.

This is the pixel-width equivalent of the below-50-characters check. Both indicate a description too brief to fill the available space. The pixel check catches cases the character count misses — for example, a 60-character description composed mostly of narrow characters that renders very narrowly.

What the Platform Checks

The platform calculates the rendered pixel width of the description using character-level width data for the font metrics used by Google's desktop search results. This check fires when the calculated pixel width is less than 400 pixels. Severity is Notice.

The safe target range is approximately 430–920 pixels — equivalent to roughly 70–155 average-width characters in the standard SERP font.

How to Fix It

Expand the description with more words or broader content. Aim for a rendered width of at least 430 pixels. As a practical guide:

  • Target approximately 120–160 characters of natural prose — this reliably lands within the safe pixel-width range for most content.
  • Avoid descriptions that are only a sentence fragment or a single clause. A complete, standalone summary of the page's value is the right length signal.
  • Verify the pixel width using a SERP snippet preview tool after editing, especially if the description contains many narrow characters.
