Semantically Similar Content
What This Means
Two or more pages cover the same topic from a highly similar angle — they are not textually near-duplicate (the words differ), but their semantic meaning, topical coverage, and likely target queries substantially overlap. A semantic similarity analysis places them above the overlap threshold.
Why It Matters for SEO
This is the keyword cannibalization problem in its classic form. When two pages target the same search intent, they compete against each other rather than reinforcing each other. Google must pick one to rank for the query; the other receives minimal or no traffic for it. Neither page achieves its ranking potential because the signals that would make one authoritative are split between both.
Semantic similarity is a notice — not every similar page is a problem. Related pages that cover similar topics from genuinely different angles (different audience, different intent, different depth) can coexist well. The check is a prompt to review whether both pages genuinely serve distinct intents or whether one should be consolidated into the other.
What the Platform Checks
The platform applies semantic analysis (vector similarity or topic modeling on extracted body text) to identify pages that cover substantially the same ground even without textual near-matches. Fires when two pages exceed the semantic overlap threshold.
How to Fix It
For each flagged pair, decide which consolidation approach fits:
- Merge: If both pages cover the same topic and neither offers unique value the other lacks, combine them into one comprehensive page and redirect the weaker URL to it.
- Redirect: If one page is clearly superior (more content, more links, better CTR), 301-redirect the weaker page to the stronger one.
- Differentiate: If both pages should exist, clearly distinguish their intents. Use different H1s, different angles, different target audiences, different CTAs, and enough unique content that a searcher with one intent would clearly prefer one page over the other.
- Accept: If the pages cover related but distinct aspects and rankings are performing well for both, this notice can be reviewed and accepted as deliberate strategy.
Prioritize: the pairs with the most significant ranking/traffic overlap should be addressed first.
