Thin Content
What This Means
After stripping navigation, headers, footers, scripts, and boilerplate from the HTML, the page's visible body text is below the platform's minimum content threshold. The page exists and is indexable, but it has very little substantive text content.
Why It Matters for SEO
Search engines evaluate whether a page genuinely addresses the topic it claims to cover. A page with 40 words of body text cannot comprehensively serve a query — it offers the searcher almost nothing beyond what the title already told them. Google's quality rater guidelines describe "thin" content as a strong negative quality signal, and algorithm updates (Panda, Helpful Content) have specifically targeted low-substance pages.
Beyond rankings, thin pages have high bounce rates. A visitor who arrives expecting substantive content and finds three sentences leaves immediately — which compounds the negative quality signal over time.
What the Platform Checks
The platform extracts all visible text after removing HTML, scripts, styles, navigation elements, headers, footers, and sidebar blocks. It then counts the visible word tokens in the main content area. Fires when this count falls below the minimum threshold for meaningful content.
How to Fix It
Expand the page with genuinely useful content that serves the searcher's intent. Approach:
- Ask: what does someone who searched for this topic actually need to know? Write to answer that, not to hit a word count.
- Add context, examples, explanations, process steps, comparisons, or FAQs — whichever format fits the topic.
- For product pages: add detailed specifications, use cases, comparison tables, and user-focused descriptions beyond a manufacturer's copy.
- For service pages: describe the process, the outcome, the typical customer situation, and what distinguishes your offer.
- If the page should be thin by design (e.g., a utility page, a thank-you page): add a noindex tag rather than padding it with content.
Note that quantity alone is not the measure — a 2,000-word page of repetitive filler is still thin content. Every added section should answer a question a reader would actually have.
