Page Buried Deep in Structure
What This Means
The page is accessible from the homepage only via a high number of link hops — typically four or more clicks. The greater the click depth, the further the page is from the homepage in the site's link graph.
Why It Matters for SEO
Search engines use click depth as a proxy for page importance. Pages close to the homepage (one or two clicks) are generally crawled more frequently and assigned more initial importance. Pages requiring four, five, or more clicks are crawled less frequently and may be treated as lower-priority.
High click depth often correlates with orphan risk (pages buried in subcategory chains) and may indicate pagination or faceted navigation paths that create very deep URL hierarchies.
What the Platform Checks
The platform performs a breadth-first traversal of internal links starting from the homepage and records the minimum click depth (hop count) to each page. Fires when a page requires more than three clicks to reach from the homepage.
How to Fix It
- Add links from higher-level pages to the deep page to reduce its minimum click depth.
- Include deeply-nested important pages in the main navigation, footer, or a site-wide links section to reduce their click depth to 1-2.
- For large sites: use breadcrumb navigation and topic cluster hub pages to create multiple short paths to deep content.
- Ensure your XML sitemap includes deeply-nested pages so crawlers can discover them even if the click path is long.
